Acne has always been considered a teenage problem. However, nowadays acne is continuing into adulthood. Acne persisting beyond the age of 25 years or appearing for the first time after the age of 25 years is termed as " Adult acne".
As a dermatologist in Kochi, i have been seeing an increasing trend in adult acne. There are lot of factors responsible for this.
Factors responsible for adult acne
Hormonal imbalances - Due to sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits, we are seeing an increase in the number of cases of polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is associated with skin changes like acne, hirsutism and hair thinning. Acne can predominantly affect the jaw line area and ca also be resistant to conventional treatment, As a dermatologist in Kochi, I always advise my patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle, incorporate exercise and follow healthy dietary habits.
Cosmetics - There is a craze over using various serums, cosmetics and skin care products that promise clear and glowing skin. Consumers are lured with advertisements on facebook and influencers on instagram. But one must remember that not all products suit everyone. If you are prone to acne, certain products may worsen acne by clogging your pores. Always use products advised by your dermatologist.
Diet - A diet rich in sugar content and diary products can worsen acne. If you are an adult with a sweet tooth, acne may continue to nag you unless you change your dietary habits.
Stress - Stress increases the level of cortisol in our body and can thus worsen many skin issues including acne.
All these factors need to be addressed while treating adult acne.
It is always advisable to consult a dermatologist as adult acne tends to scar easily as compared to teenage acne.
