What is the right way to start an anti- ageing skin care regime? At what age should we start it?
As a dermatologist in Kochi, these two are one of the commonly asked questions.
There are 4 basic steps in anti-ageing skin care regime -
Moisturiser - A good moisturiser to suit your skin type will help in keeping the skin hydrated. As a dermatologist in Kochi, I do not see the need of a separate moisturiser as the weather is humid. But if your skin is dry, it is better to use a moisturiser as the first step.
Vitamin C serum - A good vitamin C helps has photo protective, anti-oxidant and depigmentation properties. It also helps in stimulating collagen production and has anti-ageing benefits.
Sunscreen - A sunscreen is a vital part of anti-ageing skin care regime. Sunscreen prevents sunspots, sun- induced ageing and sun induced pigmentation. Reapply sunscreen every 4 hours if outdoors, As a dermatologist in Kochi, I often see that people do not reapply sunscreen. In a humid weather like ours, sunscreen gets washed away while sweating, hence it is vital to reapply sunscreen.
Retinol- This is the gold standard of anti- ageing regime. Retinol stimulates collagen production, prevents fine lines and wrinkles. It also reduces pigmentation.
The right age to start anti-ageing skin care regime is around 30 years, when our natural skin collagen and elastin production start reducing.
