Natural ways to combat oily skin

This is a guest blog written by Ms. Suman Narayan, founder of SOAPONIC, a natural, handmade, organic brand that focusses on skin and hair care products. She proudly curates every product herself using the best ingredients and cold pressed oils. The product range is available on www.soaponic.com. She blogs on www.soaponics.blogspot.com.

Oily skin is the result of the overproduction of sebum, which leads to clogged pores and acne. Oily skin can happen due to genes, poor diet or hormones, etc. There are several ways to reduce the oiliness such as self-care measures, natural ways, and also medical treatments. Let’s see the methods to keep the oil away from your skin.

1. Wash Your Face: One should wash a face twice a day to keep it clean and oil-free. But don’t overdo it. Avoid harsh products on the skin. Use gentle soaps/face washes/cleansers which don’t dry your skin. Or you can use besan/ rice flour to gently wash your face as well.

2. Toner:

Never skip skin toners. Applying a toner helps tighten your pores and removes excess oil. While choosing toners, go for alcohol-free ones. Look for the ingredients like green tea and rose water. Focus more on the T-zone. Let the toner dry. I really love the fragrance of Soaponic’s Rose toner mist. I prepare it in small batches using fresh rose petals by cold distillation method.

3. Moisturiser:

Once the toner dries, look for a water/gel-based, non- comedogenic moisturiser to prevent over-drying. Moisturisers are very important even for oily skin. Stay away from heavy cream-based moisturisers. Aloe-vera gel is very good for oily-acne prone skin. Look for an organic Aloe Vera gel free from artificial colours and additives.

4. Facial Masks:

Facial/Clay masks are helpful to cleanse your pores deeply. Look for ingredients like Multani mitti, Bentonite clay and Kaolin clay. Use the masks once a week. Add rose water to make the mixture. Never add milk-curd for oily skin. Don’t over-do it.

So, these are the simple ways to tackle the oiliness on your skin. This, along with medical treatment prescribed by your dermatologist, will help in maintaining your skin’s appearance.
