What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory disease characterized by round, scaly patches on knees, elbows, scalp, palms and soles. It has remissions and exacerbations.

I am having some reddish patches on my body. I am scared that it could be psoriasis.

Not all red lesions on the body are psoriasis. Psoriasis can only be diagnosed by a qualified dermatologist and a skin biopsy can be performed to further confirm the same.

What are the treatment options for psoriasis?

Is there a cure for psoriasis?

Psoriasis can be compared to chronic disorders like asthma. It has its ups( relapses) and downs(remissions). Once the lesions have disappeared, you should be on maintenance treatments to keep it under control.

 

Can my child develop psoriasis if I am suffering from it?

Psoriasis has a multimodal inheritance. Genetic factors definitely play a role. If 1 parent has psoriasis, there is an 8 % chance of the child developing psoriasis. If both the parents have psoriasis, the chances are up to 48%.
